Peter Yuen is a Partner at Fangda Partners in Hong Kong whose practice focuses on international and regional arbitration, China-related commercial disputes, and complex commercial litigation. He regularly represents clients in significant disputes before the Hong Kong courts and in arbitration proceedings, with particular experience in matters involving China and other cross-border elements.

Peter has substantial experience acting as coordinating counsel in multi-jurisdictional disputes, particularly where court proceedings in mainland China form part of a broader contentious strategy. His arbitration practice includes high-value commercial matters conducted under leading institutional rules, and he has acted in disputes involving shareholders, fraud, energy, natural resources, and other complex commercial issues.

In addition to his work as counsel, Peter accepts arbitral appointments and sits as an arbitrator. He is on the panel of the Beijing Arbitration Commission and the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration and is included on the list of arbitrators maintained by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. He also serves as a panel arbitrator of the Shanghai International Arbitration Centre.

Peter has handled a number of notable disputes, including acting for a Hong Kong-listed company in proceedings involving libel and malicious falsehood, representing San Want Media Holdings in a shareholder dispute concerning control of ATV, and acting for an energy company in a SIAC arbitration concerning a RMB 3 billion natural gas supply dispute.

His broader contentious practice includes regulatory and corporate compliance matters, as well as internal investigations in Hong Kong and mainland China. He has conducted a significant number of corporate investigations and advises clients on contentious regulatory and enforcement issues alongside his arbitration and litigation work.

Peter has been ranked as a leading individual for international arbitration by Chambers Asia-Pacific since 2010. He is particularly recognized for his work in shareholder disputes, fraud-related matters, regulatory proceedings, and international arbitration, with clients highlighting his ability to identify key issues quickly and provide practical guidance through complex disputes.

Before joining Fangda Partners, Peter was a partner at a Magic Circle firm, where he was responsible for its China-related dispute resolution practice. He also writes regularly on arbitration and dispute resolution, serves as a contributing editor of the Hong Kong White Book, and has co-authored The International Investigations Review.

Peter’s academic background is unusually broad. He studied chemistry at Oxford University and later served as a teaching fellow at Cornell University before moving into law. He holds an M.A. from Oxford, an M.S. from Cornell University, and a Graduate Diploma in Law, with distinction, from the College of Law in the United Kingdom. He is admitted to practice in both England and Wales and Hong Kong SAR and works in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English.

Fangda has a substantial Dispute Resolution practice spanning Mainland China, Hong Kong, and international matters, with nearly 50 partners and more than 220 associates across seven offices. The team represents clients in high-stakes litigation and arbitration, as well as investigations, regulatory proceedings, and investment protection matters.

The practice draws on lawyers across Fangda’s corporate, financial, transactional, and investment teams where matters require broader commercial or regulatory expertise. Its disputes experience spans banking, energy, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, media, pharmaceuticals, real estate, retail, technology, mining and natural resources, and telecommunications.

Fangda emphasizes practical and commercially focused dispute resolution, developing strategies tailored to the circumstances of each matter. The team combines litigation and arbitration capability with multidisciplinary support to address complex disputes efficiently across multiple sectors and jurisdictions.

Founded in 1993, Fangda Partners is a full-service law firm advising on PRC and Hong Kong law. The firm has approximately 900 lawyers across seven offices in Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Nanjing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Singapore, operating as a single integrated partnership rather than a network of separate local practices. Its lawyers include practitioners qualified in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, England and Wales, and the United States, supporting both domestic and cross-border matters.

Fangda advises leading Chinese and international companies, financial institutions, investors, and other organizations on transactions, disputes, regulatory matters, and strategic business issues. Its multidisciplinary capabilities span areas including corporate and M&A, private equity, capital markets, finance, dispute resolution, intellectual property, competition, employment, environmental law, healthcare and life sciences, technology, and regulatory matters. The firm works across a broad range of industries, including financial services, manufacturing, automotive, energy and natural resources, telecommunications, media, healthcare, retail, logistics, and technology.

The firm emphasizes integrated service across offices and practice groups, combining local legal knowledge with an international outlook. Its cross-border capabilities are designed to help clients navigate differences in law, regulation, language, and business culture, particularly in matters involving China and multiple jurisdictions. Fangda has also played a role in a number of significant developments in Chinese commercial practice, including pioneering transactions and precedent-setting disputes.

“Peter combines deep arbitration experience with substantial Hong Kong litigation and China disputes capability. His work across shareholder, fraud, energy, and natural resources matters gives him a strong platform for handling high-value disputes with significant commercial consequences.”
