Francisco M. Serrano is a partner in the Litigation and Arbitration Department at Garrigues, the firm at which he has pursued almost his entire professional career.

His wealth of expertise in international arbitration proceedings conducted in English before the most prestigious institutions, mainly in Europe (such as the CCI, the LCIA, the Zurich Chamber of Commerce), makes him an authority in the firm’s international arbitration practice.

He has participated in some of the most high-profile cases taken on by Garrigues in recent years, particularly in relation to contracts, advising and defending clients in the industrial, energy, construction, shipping, automotive, hotel and pharmaceutical sectors, to name but a few.

He can also boast broad-ranging experience in domestic civil and commercial litigation and arbitration, particularly in distribution and unfair competition cases, and in the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments and awards

He lectures on the Master’s Degree for Access to the Legal Profession at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, having also lectured for a number of years on the Master’s Degree in Business Law at the same institution, and on the Master’s Degree in Energy Law offered by Club Español de la Energía. He has also spoken at seminars and conferences on arbitration and mediation at a number of specialist centers (IBA, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Kiev Arbitration Days run by the Ukranian Bar Association, etc.).

Francisco M. Serrano is a member of the Madrid Bar Association and is a member of the Mediation Committee of the Spanish Arbitration Club.

Some of the most sensitive and complex client issues are resolved through arbitration rather than in court, particularly those with an international component. This is precisely why Garrigues was a pioneer in embracing arbitration and creating a team of litigators specializing in this alternative dispute resolution method, whose reputation is universally recognized in the market and who, with several decades of practice behind them, have garnered a wealth of expertise in all types of institutional (commercial, investment, sports, etc.) and ad hoc arbitration.

Our approach to arbitration is to place the invaluable written and oral skills of our litigators, along with our profound knowledge of the intricacies of arbitration, at the service of our clients. This signature strategy enables us to successfully defend landmark cases before the main national and international courts of arbitration, as well as before ad hoc arbitral tribunals, in a number of languages and subject to diverse legislation, not to mention the practices and customs of each industry.

Our closely coordinated team is made up of arbitration experts working out of our offices across four continents, accustomed to working with different jurisdictions, languages and cultures, who have demonstrated their prowess in hundreds of disputes involving many countries, successfully defending client interests in all areas and industries (M&A, energy, telecommunications, infrastructure, finance and insurance, among others). Thanks to Garrigues’ global nature, we have amassed direct knowledge of the legal, cultural and sociological aspects of each jurisdiction.

The meticulousness and attention to detail with which we approach each case and the energy with which we defend our clients’ position are the key to our success over the years and the reason why both our practice and our practitioners are regularly singled out for recognition by the main international legal directories.

We are an international firm that provides tax and legal advisory services at local, regional and global level, covering every angle of business law.

Garrigues’ strength lies in its team of over 2,100 people working across multiple disciplines to deliver comprehensive client solutions. And in its shared values in the 12 countries across 4 continents where it operates: unparalleled service quality, ethical commitment and an innovative approach that helps Garrigues stay one step ahead of market needs.

Our ultimate goal is to help build a climate of trust and security that fosters business development in a fairer, more ethical, responsible and sustainable society.

Francisco Manuel Serrano Osobliwa is visible as counsel on ICSID arbitration proceedings and cross-border corporate disputes often involving Latin American elements.”
